Tommy Womack comes for a visit...

Tommy is yet another artist that we first saw at the annual Springfest festival in Live Oak, Florida.  We have attended that great festival the last five years.  With the exception of our first house concert, we first experienced all these artists from Springfest.

The first time I saw Tommy Womack live was when he came to Springfest in 2006.  The set that sold me on Tommy was the acoustic set with Will Kimbrough.  They took turns playing tunes they wrote themselves or together from two of their bands:  the Bis-Quits or Daddy.

Later that weekend, Tommy and Will got the full Daddy band together and put on a blistering set of juke joint rock 'n roll.  That Daddy album was one of my favorite albums in 2006, and still gets played on a regular basis.

Susan and I agreed to approach Tommy, and it was pretty easy from there.  We went through another touring manager, but it wasn't as a big deal this time due to having already went through the process once before with Will (house concerts aren't your regular type of venue...thus a typical concert contractual agreement doesn't lend itself well).  Tommy and Will are now both represented through New Frontier Touring, and they are friendly to house concerts and understand the ideals behind these different

Tommy got into town on the afternoon of March 22, 2008.  He ate dinner with us on the back deck, and then got ready for the show.  We finished up the last minute details while Tommy did his pre-show prep.  It was another perfect evening as far as weather was concerned as well.

Tommy started off with his great "Nice Day" tune, and proceeded to crank through tune after tune.  We heard songs about Ronald Reagan, how he doesn't wanna work at a place with fluorescent lights, Betty and Willie's cross-racial dream, a fat Gene Simmons, and a glorious tune about Alpha Male and the Canine Mystery Blood.  Tommy primarily stuck with tunes from his newest album, There I've Said It.  Smart move in my opinion, since that's his strongest material to date combined with his Daddy material.

Got some good news during the set as well, since we found out that Will and Tommy are working on a new Daddy album now.

Tommy will primarily be remembered for his very funny stage presence, and after you see some of the pictures, you'll see that he rivaled some of the best facial expressions since Pops Walker played in our first show.

Afterwards, Tommy sold a bunch of CD's, a few books and shirts.  Everyone played music themselves late into the night, and after Tommy was able to wind down, he joined in with everyone.  Tommy made some new fans on Saturday night, and Susan and I were happy to host Tommy for our seventh house concert to date.

Quick thank you list:  Mic and Geri were there like always.  Since I wasn't able to be around much lately, their help was especially appreciated.  Mic is also the photographer of all the pics you see here for this show.  He's a professional photographer that is open to new work if you're interested.  My parents came down this year to see Tommy, and then they headed over to Springfest with us.  They helped quite a bit on Saturday.  We'd also like to thank Ron and Julie Merritt for lending us the lighting gear, and Ron's sound equipment expertise.  Finally, we'd like to thank everyone for coming.  It truly was another great evening of music and friendship.
