I (Bart) approached Susan in November of 2004 about an idea I had read
about on the internet. I read about how people are able to bring in small
artists to their town and enable them to play a wonderful evening of music.
Susan and I are always on the lookout for great new music, but this idea
was a bit different. A house concert allows a smaller artist to come to
your town and still make a nice profit for themselves, the house concert
host isn't out a bunch of money, and everyone gets to enjoy some great music
in a personal setting. Susan signed onto the idea, and Pops and I agreed
on a date in March of 2005.
I had found Pops Walker through CD Baby. CD Baby is a great independent
artist web site that sells their CD's for them. You are able to hear lengthy
samples of the music, and the ordering/delivery process is top notch from
CD Baby. I really enjoyed his brand of driving acoustic folk/blues, and
I thought it would make for a great evening of music that everyone could
enjoy.
Travis was one of those pure dumb luck accidents that landed in my lap.
Pops was going to drive down with his lady, Bobbi, but that wasn't going
to work. He needed someone to help him make the long drive from Virginia
to Panama City, and he called to ask if he could bring another performer.
It sounded great to me, and Pops ended up picking Travis up in North Carolina.
They both made their way to Panama City, with a brief stop to enjoy the
"wonderful" people in Columbus, Georgia (they actually had a flat tire).
The house concert worked like this. Pops came down on Saturday, we put him
up for the night in our house. The concert was to be featured on our back
deck. We would feed Pops and take care of him while he was in town. Thus
the only expenditures the artist should have is traveling expenses. All
Susan and I spent money for was some things to munch on during the concert,
and some extra food for the artists. Everyone else who came for the night
threw $10 in the pot that night. I have to say that I'm pretty proud that
we had just under 50 people come to our first house concert. It made it
a great success all around.
Finally, everyone that could play an instrument got theirs out after the
official portion of the concert was completed. Thus began the jam that went
late into the night. I can't imagine having a house concert at our house,
without the subsequent jam.
I want to thank everyone for coming, and Susan and I hope to have some more
artists come to Panama City for everyone's enjoyment.
What follows are a bunch of photo pages of the evening's entertainment.
All pictures are the property of Mic & Geri Dottorelli. Thanks to them both
for all the great pictures (they truly are part of the magic behind the
scenes that makes Music Under the Moss so special).
