Susan and I were elated to feature Michael Troy and Nick Annis during the
fall of 2006. On October 28, 2006, Nick and Michael each performed their own
brand of folk music.
Getting to know Nick and Michael...
Susan and I met Michael and Nick through the 2006 Springfest
festival, and we thought they'd make for a great evening of entertainment. Though
Michael and Nick live far from one another, they had met previously on the folk
music circuit. When you saw one during the festival, you were likely to see the
other.
Both artists were involved with Springfest's Songwriter's Contest. We met Michael briefly, during Springfest of 2005. He was a finalist in the songwriters contest, and he ended up winning the whole thing! Since he won, he earned a return engagement to Springfest 2006. Michael is from Massachusetts, and his folk style will remind many of Bob Dylan for a couple reasons. The obvious comparison is the vocal delivery, but I think Michael can rival Bob on a lyrical standpoint as well.
Nick was one of the finalists in the 2006 and 2007 songwriting contests. He came in second place both years getting nipped by Jud Caswell in 2006 and John William Davis in 2007. Nick is from South Florida, and plays a folk style that is similar to James Taylor. Nick's quirky sense of humor comes through in his music, and his storytelling abilities are sublime.
Both Michael and Nick really fit in well with our house concert regulars, and we even got to get together again with Nick at Springfest 2007. He ended up camping next to us for the entire festival. We really appreciated Michael and Nick coming to our house for the evening of music and friendship.
And damn...do these guys smoke! I swear I saw a trail of cigarette smoke leave from the vehicle as they headed back out on the road.
